Calming a HIGH ENERGY Dog

Calming a high energy dog can be as simple as riding a bike! Watch and learn how you can teach your dog to match his gait to you as you ride, giving both of you the benefit of some quality exercise.

Are you looking for ways to calm a HIGH ENERGY dog like my friend, Willie, an 18-month-old English Setter? Willie is a very high-energy dog, so it’s important to find constructive activities to expend all that energy. The solution is simple; dogs need exercise! Along with training and socialization, it’s one of the most important things you can do for your furry friend.

Teaching your dog to walk or run next to you on a bike is easier than you might think. To begin, start your dog in a continuous left circle as you walk your bike. Once you have mastered walking the left circle, try it while riding the bike. A few key points to keep in mind:

  • Your dog should always stay beside you and yield to your command and the bike.
  • This is meant to be done by a confident rider—if you are uneasy or unsteady on a bike, this may not be for you.

Once you have practiced in a circle and then in a straight path successfully, you are ready to ride with your pup. This is a really efficient way to calm a high energy dog, and it’s good for you, too.

As always, make sure you reward your dog for a job well done with some heartfelt scratches behind the ears or a treat. It’s a great time to find your next thank you!
